Services stay at edge are user plane services and MEC apps, which have strict requirement for latency. In the meantime, compute and network resources are quite limited at edge. Therefore, hardware acceleration is a must for edge cloud. However, currently hardware acceleration is bounded with the services so as to provide the best performance. Such scheme will breakdown the agility and cloud native features Operators are expected at edge cloud. In this presentation, we would share the strategy for hardware acceleration, and how to decouple edge services with accelerate hardware. We would address the 3 important factors for hardware acceleration decoupling, namely orchestration, decouple path, and service API. We will also introduce the work we are driving in the Rocket project in OPNFV, which focusing on hardware acceleration API definition and integration and testing.
