The smart home aims to transform houses and buildings into digital living spaces. This transformation is fueled by technologies such as Internet-of-Things and 5G networks. Like many new waves of technology, the smart home brings benefits and risks. Today’s home automation systems already bear security flaws and vulnerabilities. A requirement for the smart home to become reality is the upgrade of residential networks to sustain new bandwidth, latency, and protocol requirements. These upgrades will increase their attack surface. As the network is a centerpiece of a smart home, it is the point to implement security measures. Leveraging big data and machine learning, new network intrusion detection solutions are specifically geared towards detecting malicious behavior in smart homes. In this talk, we will elicit the threat landscape for the emerging smart home and our vision to secure those.
